Our History

Rooted in Christ, Growing in Grace

HISTORY OF BEAVER DAM CHURCH

The religious heritage of the Beaver Dam Church dates back to December 27, 1822 when Jarvis B. Buxton deeded one acre of land to six trustees including Henry Clark, Joseph Hinton, Timothy Cutler, Samuel Hawkins, and Jarvis Buxton, as long as a framed house devoted to the public worship of Almighty God is kept thereon. It was to be available for all denominations to worship without exclusive rights to any one.

In February 1824 the deed was registered to the trustees of the "Union Church." The name "Union Church" hints at the non-denominational beginnings of the Beaver Dam Church. Five congregations trace their roots back to the "Union Church" including Zion Episcopal, which in its history written in 1885 states that Jarvis B. Buxton was a lay speaker in the church. Asbury Methodist Church also has in its records that they met at the free church at Beaver Dam. In 1822 Joseph Biggs and Jeremiah Mastin constituted the church as a regular Baptist church and enrolled it with the Bethel Conference of Free Will Baptists in 1829. The conference representatives were Thomas Everett in 1842 and Silas Ange in 1844. A group of primitive Baptists also used the building for a time.

In 1833 Alexander and Thomas Campbell introduced the Disciples's movement, an attempt to unify Christianity through the restoration of the New Testament Church, to eastern North Carolina. On one occasion they visited at Tranter's Creek Baptist Church. One of the converts was Thomas . Latham, a 37 year old school teacher, and one of the best trained men in Beaufort County. He later helped lead the Free Will Baptists to merge with the Disciple Movement as Christians only.

In 1845 the merger took place with 48 members, and was not distinctly organized as such until April 30, 1856 when Amos Battle, Thomas Latham, and Seth Tyson led in the effort.

In 1952 The Daily News reported the congregation as having 450 members and services held on the first and third Sundays of the month.

Our Minister, Tony Krantz

Tony has been our minister here at Beaver Dam Church of Christ since 1990, humbly bringing his passion for ministry, music, and fellowship to our congregation.

Born and raised in Lynchburg, VA, as a child Tony quickly grew a love for the Lord.  He graduated from Roanoke Bible College (now known as Mid-Atlantic University) in 1983. Tony has dedicated his life to serving others through faith and music.

Making Washington his permanent home in 1990, Tony has found happiness in his marriage to Jo Ann for over three decades. Together, they have two adult children, a son, and a daughter, as well as a loving daughter-in-law and son-in-law. Tony and Jo Ann also find great joy in their eight grandchildren.

Tony's interests go beyond the pulpit, reflecting his many diverse talents and passions. Known for his captivating piano playing, singing, and original songs, he is also a talented playwright and songwriter, crafting engaging musicals that touch the heart and mind, as well as over 100 original songs about faith.

During his college years, he played piano for The Stephenson’s Brothers and he was a member of The Exertations and later Sons’ Up, sharing his musical talents far and wide.

Tony's commitment to ministry extends beyond the church walls. Twenty-five years ago, as his children were teens, Tony recognized the need for a program catering to youth interested in the arts. He took the initiative to create the MAD (Music and Drama) camp at Roanoke Christian Camp. This faith-based week allows young people to explore music and drama in a supportive, Christian environment.

With his caring nature evident, Tony extends his support while visiting the sick and shut-in, providing comfort during both joyful and difficult times, including weddings and funerals. Additionally, on occasion he is asked to guest speak at other churches, where he lends his musical talents to bring uplifting praise and worship.

Beyond music, Tony finds joy in spending time with his family, fishing, and hydroponic gardening. Despite his many accomplishments, Tony maintains a humble demeanor and is always eager to connect with others to share his love for Christ.

We feel fortunate to have Tony Krantz as our preacher, mentor, and friend. Join us as we continue to grow in faith, community, and love.
